Interesting read.. Went to Charlton from Maidstone where we lived. Watched them play Huddersfield and they lost 7 - 6. Denis Law scored 5 for Huddersfield and my old man said : "That's a real footballer". Memories hey!!!!!!!!! Sounds like I am an old Prick but then again I am one. No seating stand on the Terraces in all weathers. Real football fans.

My old man was a Gooner, for his sins. In all fairness, he did grow up close to Highbury before moving the family back out to the glorious east - so I'll let him off: he supported his local side.
His favourite player was Charlie George.

My old man is a Chelsea fan. As a kid I remember him loving Peter Osgood and Peter Bonetti. He always spoke of them. But his idol was Greaves and he always says "As a young kid, seeing a bloke score 125 goals in 4 seasons, you don't get better than that". My dad said he was 'devastated' when they sold him to AC Milan. At just 14 he thought his world had fallen in.
Later on my dad loved Kerry Dixon and Pat Nevin.
You may wonder why I don't support Chelsea but we moved to Essex when I was a young kid and at school all my mates were West Ham and, straight away, that was my tribe. There were no obvious Chelsea fans around in Essex in the early to mid 80's as they were pretty shit then.
I told my dad one day I was going to West Ham with my mate and his dad for my first game. Up to that point we'd not really discussed it too much. He wasn't a pushy dad and never has been. He just told me to "Go and enjoy it, son".

Although he also says that Jimmy Greaves was the greatest finisher he ever saw ... not in a West Ham shirt mind!
